Your Furnace Turns On and Off in Short Bursts
A normal heating cycle typically lasts 10 to 15 minutes before shutting off. If your furnace is turning off after only a minute or two and then restarting shortly after, this is known as short cycling. It usually indicates something is interrupting the furnace before it completes its cycle. Common and easily rectifiable causes include a dirty filter restricting airflow or a thermostat misreading the room temperature.
If changing the filter and checking the thermostat don’t resolve the issue, especially with an older unit, short cycling could signify an overheating heat exchanger that’s shutting down as a safety measure. This is less of a quick fix and more of a sign that your system is nearing the end of its reliable lifespan.
Rising Energy Bills With No Clear Reason
Furnaces lose efficiency with age, and this often first appears on your energy bill. If your heating costs have steadily increased over the past season or two, without a corresponding jump in usage or local utility rates, your furnace is likely working harder to produce the same amount of heat.
Often, a tune-up can restore some of that lost efficiency. However, if your bills continue to climb year after year despite regular maintenance, it typically suggests the equipment is succumbing to old age rather than a single, fixable problem.
A Technician Says Parts Are Hard to Find
Sometimes, replacement isn’t about your furnace failing outright, but rather about the availability of parts. Manufacturers eventually discontinue components for older models. Once a part is no longer produced, a repair that once took a day could stretch into weeks, if it’s even possible.

It Takes Longer to Heat Your House Than It Used To
You understand your furnace’s normal operating rhythm better than any specification sheet. A Yellow or Flickering Flame
